Delegate at Large H: Hector Sapien
Hector is a clinical social worker who has provided practical learning opportunities to people of all ages & in various roles & settings. He has an extensive history of cultivating & leading teams to excel under very challenging conditions. Hector is currently in private practice in Maine.
Hector began work as a child care worker in residential treatment centers, and then continued onto psychiatric hospital settings. He is able to understand the intensity and demands of working in a therapeutic milieu. As he later moved into supervisory, management, administrative, and now consultative positions he brought with him the knowledge of the challenges that face practitioners as they discover ways to improve their effectiveness, stamina, and fulfillment.
Hector has worked in other settings including therapeutic recreation, therapeutic foster care, community mental health, and national social service corporations. He has consulted in risk management, quality assurance, & new program start-ups. This included designing, implementing, monitoring, & maintaining programs for diverse populations as well as recruiting, training, & retention of competent staff.
He currently teaches classes in Child & Youth Work and Human Services as adjunct faculty with the University of Maine at Augusta (Ellsworth Extension Campus) as well as provides child care provider training through Maine Roads to Quality with the Muskie Institute, and is a Head Start Consultant with Child and Family Opportunities in Ellsworth, Maine. He also sees clients in outpatient psychotherapy through Care & Comport. He is also a senior trainer for the Academy of Competent Youth Work and has just been appointed as treasurer to the Association for Child and Youth Care Practice (ACYCP).
