For the past 30+ years, he has been a leader in the field of child and youth care. Gene has worked directly with many troubled youth and families. He has mentored many new dedicated youth workers to become better prepared child and youth care professionals.

Based on this experience, he has presented at national, regional and local training events. He has trained staff extensively in all his employment settings. He has worked in group homes and residential facilities, as well as consulting with various programs, agencies and charter schools to improve services and training. Gene has also been involved with state regulatory tasks forces, board of directors and associations that advocated/influencing improved child and youth care services. This includes supporting NOCCWA in its development years and attending committee meetings. Other board membership include:
